Dynamic Ankle Foot Orthoses (DAFO)
Dynamic ankle foot orthoses rely on the total contact fit of thin flexible plastic to optimally control the mid and hindfoot during ambulation. Many styles of dynamic AFOs are available and are able to be modified to suit a child’s individual needs. The goal of dynamic bracing is to support weak muscles and prevent unwanted motion while properly positioning the foot and ankle. Dynamic AFOs allow active muscles to fire, thereby reducing the likelihood of disuse atrophy.
Dynamic AFOs may be used to control:
- Crouching
- Toe-walking
- Hyperpronation
- Hypertonicity
- Knee Hyperextension
Dynamic AFOs may be indicated for children with:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Clubfoot (Talipes Equinovarus)
- Spina Bifida
- Congenital Foot Deformity
- Tight Heel Cords
